Useful niche search engines

ResourceShelf took a look this week at a handful of niche search engines. ResourceShelf is a big fan of bypassing a general Web engine for a more focused search tool whenever possible. So take a look at the following search engines. My favorite: eHealthcareBot.com For more information please go to ResourceShelf

We have decided to deliver these enhancements in two phases, first focusing on workflow improvement and then on new features to the product. What will this week’s release include? All of the workflow enhancements and interface revisions you’ve been hearing about since our email campaign began on July 1st:

Search Tab Additions and Enhancements – A new Multi-Field Search tab provides multiple search boxes for assigning specific fields that allow for a more targeted and specific search experience. Basic Search now includes instructional text with hints on best practices. Plus, we’ve streamlined the main search screen with a sleeker and more intuitive user design.
New and Improved User Workflow Tools – Flexibility and speed are crucial to research workflow. Features in the upcoming OvidSP release include:
Collapsible Search Aid box
Results Manager is collapsible and available above and below the main search box
Ability to move the Search History above the main search box, sort searches in ascending or descending order, and identify each search by search type
Customize common limits on the main search page
Ability to create, edit, and add multiple annotations to a citation
Browse Books and Browse Journals links are now on the
Select a Database page
Browser support for adjusting font size

Based on the phased release approach, two additional key items — My Projects, a new workspace area for saving and managing files, and Ovid Universal Search™, our new premium cross-platform search solution — will be part of a later phase of this release, which we’ll announce in the coming weeks. We’re committed to delivering the best platform in the market, and this phased release will allow us more time to refine and test the performance, integration, and usability of these important features. We realize that many of you are preparing your institution for the upcoming OvidSP release with these features in mind. This phased approach reflects Ovid’s dedication to delivering optimal user experience.

Stay tuned for more details on when My Projects and Ovid Universal Search will be made available in the platform. In the meantime, be sure to visit the OvidSP Resource Center for materials and information to help you get the word out about this week’s release. Blackwell-Wiley Update

Blackwell Synergy Journals have moved to Wiley InterScience

As of Monday, June 30, 2008, 1.6 million Blackwell journal articles—including full-text HTML and PDF versions of articles from current issues, backfiles, and issues published online before print—are available through Wiley InterScience. Blackwell Synergy is no longer online.

We are working hard to ensure a smooth transition for all customers and users, and thank you for your patience during this time of change. Following is a list of the known issues which we are working on as a top priority:

* OpenURL links — These are currently not redirecting at the journal level but instead default to the Wiley InterScience homepage. We expect this to be resolved within a few days.
* Athens authentication — We are working on resolving this.
* Access to some subscribed titles is not set up — Submit your request to our Customer Services team here: interscience.wiley.com/support
* Missing content — see below for the list of content which we are still working on uploading onto Wiley InterScience.
* DOIs — if these do not resolve correctly to the appropriate article, it may be because we have not yet loaded that article.

Health Disparities Added to PubMed Special Queries

The NLM Special Queries page now includes a link to a new subject page on health disparities.

According to the National Cancer Institute, health disparities refer to differences between groups of people. These differences can affect how frequently a disease affects a group, how many people get sick, or how often the disease causes death.

The MEDLINE® /PubMed® Search and Health Disparities Information Resources page offers a PubMed search including subject terms and other keywords. Areas of coverage include health disparities and minority health research.

The strategy uses MeSH® headings to retrieve indexed citations, plus title and abstract words to obtain other unindexed citations.

This search retrieves literature in many languages and research from many countries. The search currently retrieves over 57,000 PubMed citations.

The resources page provides links to other health disparities resources such as links to U.S. Government agencies, associations, foundations, research centers and grant information.

Send your comments about this resource to custerv@nlm.nih.gov or use our contact form.

For more information on the Special Queries Resource in PubMed, see the article New Special Queries Resource in PubMed®. NLM TechBull. 2005 Mar-Apr;(343):e1.

The cards were updated throughout the physician's career with information about degrees obtained, licensing, addresses and finally cause of death and sometimes obituary citations and even portraits. New OVID interface active

Ovid released their new OvidSP interface today which offers multiple search modes so that users can select a searching method according to personal preference and information need. Using tabs, searchers can move easily between search modes:

* Basic Search– Geared to novice or occasional searchers that might prefer to enter queries using free text (e.g. everyday language) and have results ranked by relevancy.

* Advanced Search – This mode looks very much like the "old" Ovid Advanced Search interface and this searching mode supports Boolean search terms and command line syntax searching. THIS IS THE DEFAULT SETUP FOR NMCSD LIBRARY CUSTOMERS.

* Find Citation – Is a useful tool for users who need a quick match and already know at least part of a bibliographic citation.

* Search Tools – Allows users to access specific tools, such as trees, permuted index, scope notes, explode, and more to find information.

* Search Fields – Searches by specific field(s) to permit searching of abstracts, author name, ISSN, and other criteria.

To learn more please download OvidSP's Get started user guide or OvidSP's Quick reference cards
